I've always wondered about this myself. The only advantage I can see of using anti-virus software on a Mac is when you have Mac and Windows computers in the same house, or the same business. They *might* help keep you from having a Windows virus on a Mac system, and then transferring that virus to your Windows system, but if you have anti-virus software running on your Windows system, this is also a moot point.
