There won't be an "X" in the corner of any app that's included with the iPhone by default (Apple doesn't want you deleting apps like YouTube, Weather, Camera, etc.), but there should be an "X" in the corner of any icon that you have downloaded.
If you have several screens of app icons, it may help to move to the screen that contains the app you want to delete, then press the icon for a couple of seconds. After that, you should be able to delete it.
