From the song People Are People, by Depeche Mode: “I can’t understand what makes a man hate another man, help me understand.”
When I was younger I used to love those lyrics. I still do, but these days, thanks to a couple of rude neighbors, I know the answer to that riddle. In one specific case it happens when one neighbor revs his motorcycle as loud as possible at all hours of the day, and in another case it happens when a neighbor plays her music very loud.
The common denominator of these situations is that these people are imposing something they want onto my personal space. In both cases I don’t care how often that guy rides his motorcycle or what kind of music my neighbor plays, as long as I don’t have to hear them while I’m sitting in my living room.
For me the moral of the story is, have fun doing what you want to do, but respect the rights and personal space of others while you do it, and maybe we can all get along.
