iPhone/iPad display specifications FAQs: What is the display resolution of the iPad, iPhone, or iPod? How large are the screens (pixels, or ppi)?

I've been doing a lot of work lately converting my DVD movie collection into digital movie files that I can watch on my iPhone, and as part of converting these DVD movies into digital movie files, I needed to learn about the iPhone, iPod, and iPad specifications, in particular their screen/display specifications.

After doing this research I thought I'd share this information as well for other people that might need it, so, here are the iPhone 3G, iPhone 4, iPod Touch, and iPad display specifications I've found. Here are links to the sections below:

iPhone 3G display specifications

Here are the iPhone 3G display specifications:

  • 480 by 320 pixels, 163 ppi (pixels per inch)
  • 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen Multi-Touch display
  • 8GB or 16GB data storage

(I've included data storage specifications here as well, as it is an important consideration when you're creating movies for your iPhone 3G and other devices.)

iPod Touch display specifications

Here are the current iPod Touch display specifications:

  • 480 by 320 pixels, 163 ppi
  • 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen Multi-Touch display
  • 32GB or 64GB flash drive

iPhone 4 display specifications

Here are the iPhone 4 specifications:

  • 960 by 640-pixel resolution at 326 ppi
  • 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen Multi-Touch display
    • 800:1 contrast ratio (typical)
  • 500 cd/m2 max brightness (typical)
  • 16GB or 32GB flash drive

iPad display specifications

Here are the first generation iPad display specifications:

  • 1024 by 768-pixel resolution at 132 pixels per inch (ppi)
  • 9.7-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit glossy widescreen Multi-Touch display with IPS technology
  • 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB flash drive
