My colectomy (colon resection) experience (recovery, diet)

“I’m going to have to resect the colon.”

~ pretty much every surgeon on M*A*S*H at some point

In late June, 2018, I had to have a colectomy surgery, which is also known as a colon resection. Here’s a diary of my experience.

Somewhere along the way I managed to look at the calendar for the wrong year: This year April 28 was the last Friday in April, and also my last day with the company I founded so many years ago. As I'm getting ready to leave town this coming Tuesday, this last week was filled with very little work, and many goodbye visits with former employees, clients, and other friends outside of the business.

We told the employees last Thursday about the sale, and it generally didn't seem like a huge deal. We have fourteen full-time employees and four contractors right now, and because there isn't a big change in regime, and because I'm rarely at the office anyway, I just don't think it's a big change for most of the employees.

Because I work with the employees in the field much more, they seemed to react much more, but in the end it was all well-wishes, "let's keep in touch", and so on.

It took a little longer than desired, but we finally closed on the business sale late this afternoon. After ten years as a successful small business owner, I am now no longer a small business owner. I'm now a guy who sold his small business, or at least a guy who sold his majority ownership in his small business.

I don't know if it's sunk in yet, but I'm sure it will sink in as soon as I don't get a quarterly distribution check. In the meantime, these nice, big six-figure checks will have to do.

I deleted all the other December diary entries between December 10th and now because they were just a bunch of back and forth between the partners and myself about the Goodwill Clause, subsequent complaints about the sales price I had already "negotiated" with them before that clause, and other small details.

In the process I managed to leave town twice more (once for a break, once to visit my family now for the holidays), and all of our attorneys also managed to delay the process.

I'll assume that David and George talked to the other partners over the weekend, I really don't know for sure. They didn't come back with anything by the end of the weekend, and I'm heading home for Thanksgiving tomorrow morning. I was going to ask them not to bother me over the long weekend, but it doesn't seem like that will be a problem. I don't know if they're having some problems within their group, but I'm surprised at how long it's taking for them to come back to me after our last meeting, where they seemed so happy and positive.
