Laying in bed until whenever

After a long work day yesterday I decided to sleep in today until whenever. After I almost got enough rest I found myself sleeping in my bed in the house I grew up in. The bed was against an outer bedroom wall, where I had it when I was a young teenager. (I would later move it to an inner wall.) Then a former friend came in the room and told me I was being lazy and I should get up and yada yada yada. I beamed her right out of there.

Then a young, healthy version of Zeus came in and stood next to the bed. I thought about asking him if he had to go out, but he jumped up on the bed and laid down next to me. That sure wasn’t going to make me want to get out of bed.

Letting a gnat live

I started to kill a gnat tonight, and as I went to hit it, it rocked back on its back legs, looked up at me and screamed, “Stop! It’s me, Zeus!”

I looked at it and said, “Zeus was too good, he taught me kindness and compassion; I can’t believe he would have been reborn as a gnat. But l’ll let you live. Go on, enjoy your life.”

Zeus, the best dog ever

Once upon a time there was a dog named Zeus. Before we met him, Zeus had a very difficult life, having been abused by two different owners. When my wife saw Zeus on a local tv station, and they said the Animal Care Society was going to be extremely careful about who adopted him next, she seemed to know that she had to take care of him.

As you can see from the following pictures, when we first adopted Zeus, he was very sick, with a horrible case of mange.

Waking up in a hospital

I wake up at 3:40am, hearing something dripping. I follow the sound around the new apartment until I find that it’s coming from the refrigerator. Looking around, I don’t see any water on the floor, inside the refrigerator compartment, or in the freezer. My guess is that this is what it sounds like when it defrosts. I have a sip of water and go back to bed.

I wake up some time later. It’s bright, so I don’t want to open my eyes. I’m enjoying a comfortable rest, and the pillow and sheets smell fresh and clean.

Wait.

Why is it so bright? I haven’t been here long, but I know that the Sun rises on the other side of the building, and my bedroom only get indirect light in the morning.

Without moving my body, I open my eyes and look around. I see enough to know that I’m in a hospital.

Drink wine, rescue dogs

If you know me, you know about Zeus, a rescue dog who came back from a very bad place. As a result of a few friendships I know a few people who would like this t-shirt. The iheartdogs.com website says that sales of this t-shirt help to feed seven shelter dogs (at first I thought that was seven shelters) through their partnership with Rescue Bank. If you like the Rescue Bank mission you can skip the t-shirt and go right to the Rescue Bank donation page.

Zeus

I was just doing some work on my One Man's Alaska website, and noticed that hundreds of people every month visit my page about Zeus over there. He was a very special dog, and I'm glad if more people can learn about him, and the effect that an animal can have on a person's life.
