The Neatest Little Guide to Stock Market Investing (review) alvin March 12, 2014 - 2:00pm

The book, The Neatest Little Guide to Stock Market Investing, is one of the best -- if not the best -- books on investing I have ever read. The author explains things simply, and uses good examples. He makes his case, and points out good, simple implementations of his strategies.

Dream of Columbo, Kojak, and the guy from Hawaii 5-0

I’m sitting in the large back seat of a car with Columbo, Kojak, and the guy from Hawaii 5-0. We’re hungry, so Columbo is driving us to this restaurant he knows.

We take a right at a corner, and Columbo pulls forward about four parking spaces and parks the car. As he pulls through the empty parking spaces I see the pavement as though I’m a hood ornament on the car, looking down over the front of the car. I don’t wonder about that, but I do wonder why he didn’t take the first parking spot, which would have been closer to the restaurant, whose entrance is on the corner.

Why does Wall Street hate Apple (AAPL)? alvin October 1, 2013 - 9:11am

Why does the stock market hate Apple? Check out these numbers, where P/E means “price to earnings”, and EPS means “earnings per share”. When a P/E ratio is high, it means Wall Street loves you for one reason or another, and when EPS is high, it means you’re making a lot of money (or at least a lot of money per share):

            P/E EPS
           ----- -----
Google 25.6 34.6
Dell 18.0 0.8
Microsoft 13.0 2.6
Apple 12.1 40.1
Amazon NaN -0.2 # "p/e" is NaN because eps is negative

Why I no longer tell people that I went to the Buddhist Geeks Conference

Today I decided that I will no longer tell people that I went to the Buddhist Geeks Conference this past weekend. The reason isn't that I'm embarassed about it in any way. Indeed, I met some of the nicest, most interesting people I've ever met, and I hope to stay in touch with them, help them in their missions, and see them again next year.

My Facebook timeline, March 3, 2013 alvin March 3, 2013 - 5:21pm

I like how the Anchorage Daily News puts a photo of the front cover of their newspaper on Twitter most days, so I thought I'd try something like that, posting a photo of my Facebook timeline from time to time. I don't know if I'll keep doing this, but I'll do it at least once. Here's what my timeline looks like on March 3, 2013:
