Cold November rain in July (Wasilla, Alaska) alvin July 28, 2018 - 12:57pm

July 28, 2010, Wasilla, Alaska: Bundled up in a semi-rainproof jacket and hat, I just returned from a walk in the cold November rain. Most neighbor's fireplaces were in full use, while one man in a jacket and shorts and smoking a cigarette was mowing his weeds with his lawnmower. Hard to believe, Denali National Park closes for the winter in just six or seven weeks.

I don’t mind straight people as long as they act gay in public alvin July 5, 2018 - 9:38am

A bumper sticker seen in Alaska on July 5, 2010: “I don’t mind straight people as long as they act gay in public.”

The day the Court Circuit came to town

A Facebook post from March 22, 2010, when I was stranded in a small town in Canada:

How neat, the “Court Circuit” comes to town tonight. Just like the Northern Exposure episode, the court people travel around and temporarily set up court in various towns. They are expected to be here from tonight until Thursday. My chance to meet many police officers! (RCMPs, I wonder?)

One of my favorite highway traffic signs in Alaska

This is one of my favorite traffic signs in all of the world. You can find it if you drive north from Anchorage, Alaska towards Wasilla and Palmer. When I lived in Alaska in 2010-2011, I would take the exit to the right to go to Palmer. If you keep going straight you’ll go to Wasilla, then Willow, Talkeetna, and eventually Denali and then Fairbanks. (If you’re really gung ho, as I was, you can also drive to Prudhoe Bay, if you don’t mind 400 miles of dirt roads.)

And as you can tell from the highway numbers 1 & 3, there aren’t many main roads in Alaska. :)

Zeus, the best dog ever

Once upon a time there was a dog named Zeus. Before we met him, Zeus had a very difficult life, having been abused by two different owners. When my wife saw Zeus on a local tv station, and they said the Animal Care Society was going to be extremely careful about who adopted him next, she seemed to know that she had to take care of him.

As you can see from the following pictures, when we first adopted Zeus, he was very sick, with a horrible case of mange.

A brisk start to the morning in Talkeetna, Alaska alvin October 23, 2017 - 10:18am

A brisk 24 degrees to start the morning in Talkeetna, but I’m kinda getting used to it.

First stay at the Talkeetna Roadhouse

Never stayed in a roadhouse before, pretty interesting. You can walk in off the street and buy a shower for $4. Setup is communal, like a hostel.

“You know what a juice diet cleans out of you?” alvin October 15, 2017 - 9:24am

“A month ago I went on a juice cleanse. You know what it cleans out of you best? The will to live.”
