How to create a “spacer” in JavaFX (with a Region)

As a brief note to self, I just created a “spacer” in JavaFX using a Region, as shown in this code:

// a spacer to push the visible elements up a little
val spacer = new Region
VBox.setVgrow(spacer, Priority.ALWAYS)

I originally created the spacer as a Separator, which is the wrong thing (it’s more like an HTML <hr> tag). A JavaFX Region just gives you a blank space, which you can control as needed.

An RSS Reader written with Scala and JavaFX (the beginning)

I just started writing an RSS Reader application using JavaFX and Scala, and I thought I’d post the initial code here. This code shows several advanced Scala techniques that Scala developers might need to use when writing Scala code to interact with Java, and in this case, JavaFX.

A custom JavaFX web browser (to show stock quotes)

I’m currently doing something completely different, and writing a little custom web browser using JavaFX and its WebView component. I’m using it so I can easily look at stock quotes and charts. I just started on it, and the current UI looks like this:

Java Store update

After seeing some ads for the Java Store on this website, I just read up on it again, and it sounds pretty interesting. The Java Store is currently in a beta program state ... hmm, I just finished poking around, and I can't find any information on when they intend to go from a Beta to a Live state, but after seeing the ads here, I'm wondering how close they are to going live.

Java App Store

In a blog entry, Sun CEO Jonathan Schwartz writes about Project Vector, which he says will probably be renamed the Java Store. I know that a lot of companies are coming out with their own "stores" now, but for me, this is probably the most interesting Java announcement in years.
