Troubleshooting Printing Problems

To resolve printer problems you should follow an orderly diagnostic procedure.

1. Check the printer for physical problems:

  1. Power?
  2. Data cable?
  3. On-line?
  4. Paper jam?
  5. Ribbon or toner out?
  6. Paper out?

2. Check the spooler status with lpstat -t

  1. Is the scheduler (lpsched) running?
  2. Are there any jobs in the queue?
  3. Is the queue accepting requests?
  4. Is the queue enabled?

3. Check print service log files

  1. /usr/spool/lp/logs/requests
  2. /usr/adm/messages
  3. /usr/adm/syslog
  4. /usr/spool/lp/logs/lpsched
  5. /usr/spool/lp/logs/messages
  6. /usr/spool/lp/logs/exec
