Introduction

Creating tape backups is one of your most important functions as the manager of a computer system. Reliable tape backups must be created. In the event of an emergency, if your computer system fails, or files are accidently deleted, you must have good backup tapes in place that you can restore this information from.

UNIX systems offer many commands that can be used to backup your filesystems. These include tar, cpio, as well as dump and restore.

In this section we’ll introduce some of these commands, and outline SCO’s preferred method for creating backups of your filesystems.

We’ll also stress the importance of having Emergency Boot Diskettes. These are the diskettes that you will need in case something goes wrong with your disk drive(s).
