Printers can be connected to Unix computer systems in many ways. The primary ways that printers are connected to Unix systems are shown below.
- Printer is physically connected to the computer system via a parallel or serial port.
- Printer is connected to a second Unix system, and printing from one Unix system to the other over the network.
- Printer is connected to a Novell NetWare or Windows NT server, and printing occurs over the network.
- Printer is attached to the network using a "print server". The print server usually simulates a remote Unix system.
