Print System Configurations

Printers can be connected to Unix computer systems in many ways. The primary ways that printers are connected to Unix systems are shown below.

  1. Printer is physically connected to the computer system via a parallel or serial port.
  2. Printer is connected to a second Unix system, and printing from one Unix system to the other over the network.
  3. Printer is connected to a Novell NetWare or Windows NT server, and printing occurs over the network.
  4. Printer is attached to the network using a "print server". The print server usually simulates a remote Unix system.
