The Print Spooler System

How does a print job move through the spooler once it is submitted with the lp command?

  1. Print requests are submitted with the "lp" command.
  2. The lp command communicates with the scheduler (lpsched, also known as the spooler daemon).
  3. lpsched obtains the configuration information for the printer, creates the necessary files for the print job, and queues the print job.
  4. The print job waits in the proper print queue behind any other jobs until the other jobs are finished.
  5. When it moves to the front of the print queue, the print job is filtered by the interface program for the printer queue and sent to the printer.
