Introduction

Creating a podcast on the Mac (using Mac OS X) using GarageBand reminds me of a phrase an old friend used to say from time to time: It's intuitively obvious once you know how to do it.

This means that when you first look at GarageBand and you want to create a podcast you end up just sitting there and staring at the screen, not knowing how to get started. If you're new to audio recording like I am there aren't any clues that tell you how to get started. But fear not, I hope to provide a few helpful clues to get you started, and save you a few hours of trial and error in the process.

So, in this tutorial I will show you:

  1. How to create a first "hello world" podcast using GarageBand on the Mac.
  2. How to use the most basic controls you'll need to create your own podcasts.
  3. How to export your podcast as a file you can share with others.

In future tutorials (see "other tutorials") I'll show you how to use more advanced features, like adding introductory music, sound clips, ducking, copying, splitting, and joining clips, and more, into your podcasts. But first let's get started with the basics.
