A brisk 24 degrees to start the morning in Talkeetna, but I’m kinda getting used to it.

adn.com has a story about golfing in Alaska, titled, Bears and moose are par for the course in Anchorage golfing.
The Fairbanks, Alaska ArcticCam shows snow on the ground this morning, October 19, 2017. The high today is 24 degrees (F), the low is 12. The high/low is 32/16 in Talkeetna as well.
Fairbanks, Alaska got its first official snow of the season on Friday, September 29, 2017. But it’s still relatively warm up there, and it didn’t last long.
Then there was the time I followed four bears down the road in Alaska.
To fish in Alaska, you have to really want it.

In sad news, Talkeetna’s Mayor Stubbs passed away at the age of 20 on July 22, 2017.
I recently read that moose tend to attack dogs, and therefore people with dogs, because they look at dogs as a potential predator. Given that background, here’s a nice story on adn.com about a person and their dog in Alaska.
“On Saturday, a big Labrador retriever named Thorr bounded up to the nurse’s station in Sitka Community Hospital and nudged Ryan Huddlestun, twice. Down the hall, Thorr’s owner, Eric Lamont Skousen, was having a seizure. The nudges were a call for help, one Skousen couldn’t give himself.”

Back in 2011, I lived in Palmer, Alaska. I drove about an hour down to Anchorage to visit a friend, then drove back to Palmer just after 1:30am. During the drive back I didn’t need my headlights on to see, but I kept them on so other cars could see me more easily. It was like driving during a very long “dawn” or “dusk” period.
One of the little known things about Alaska — Palmer in particular — is that there is a lot of farming in Alaska. This photo promotes the Antique Power Club’s annual “Plow Day” event. The photo comes from the Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman Facebook page. (Personally, I loved looking at the snow-covered mountains as I rode my bicycle around the farms.)

I don’t remember the original source of this photo, but it shows an early attempt at using a sled to get around in Alaska. It worked well until that one day ...
It’s hard to believe it’s been this long, but ten years ago today I hopped in the car, aimed in the general direction of Alaska, and a little less than a month later I ended up in Talkeetna. Hopefully in another ten years The Squirrel and I will be sitting on the front porch again, eating popcorn, Cheerios, cherries, and PB&J sandwiches, and catching up on the last twenty years of adventures.

2017 Iditarod: “The 57-year-old musher from Sterling won the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race on Tuesday, shattering the speed record by nearly eight hours to steal the title of fastest Iditarod musher ever from his much-younger son, Dallas. ‘Fifty-seven used to be old, and it’s not anymore. I’m just letting you know that,’ Mitch Seavey said.”
