“Excuse me, you’re in the way”

“A man of knowledge lives by acting,
not by thinking about acting.”

Carlos Castaneda

By now you know that I think a lot about attitude, and if there are any major secrets to my success, one of them is that at some point I learned that I was smart enough, and aggressive enough, to know when I was right about something. Once I gained confidence in myself, if I was clearly right about something and someone didn’t agree with me, I didn’t hesitate to say, or at least think, “Excuse me, you’re in my way.”

Port covers

Just a few months out of college, I was assigned to a missile project that had to do with something known as “port covers.” In short, port covers are like little doors on the sides of air-breathing rockets. If you’ve seen a little model rocket, or perhaps a firework that shoots up into the sky, you know that a rocket is basically a tube, like the cardboard tube that’s inside a roll of toilet paper. A normal solid rocket motor like this is filled with solid rocket fuel, which is something like a solid version of gasoline.

To complain is your nonacceptance of what is

“To complain is (your) nonacceptance of what is. When you complain, you make yourself into a victim. When you speak out, you are in power. So change the situation by taking action or speaking out. Leave the situation or accept it; all else is madness.

If you find your here and now intolerable and it makes you unhappy, you have three options:

  • Remove yourself from the situation
  • Change it
  • Accept it totally

If you want to take responsibility for your life, you must choose one of those three options. Then accept the consequences. No excuses. No negativity.”

Android source code to show a popup dialog with a text field

I am working on a way to rapidly mock up Android applications using Android Studio, i.e., to rapidly prototype Android applications on the fly, and little snippets of code help to make this happen. For instance, this snippet of code shows how to show a popup dialog to prompt a user to enter information into a text field:

Learn how to influence people

“When you listen to someone,
you should give up all your preconceived ideas
and subjective opinions; you should just listen to him,
just observe what his way is.”

Zen Master Shunryu Suzuki

If you’ve read the previous chapters, you’re now well past the basics. You’re a trustworthy person, a problem solver, you don’t create any problems for your sponsor, and you know how to make the big decisions. Now we’ll dig into a few of the finer points of being a consultant.

Don’t post stuff on social media, take action

For everyone who is upset by the actions of the current president and other political leaders, I urge you to take action. By “action” I don’t mean posting things on social networks. I mean writing your senators and congressmen. I mean peacefully marching and demonstrating. I mean supporting others who are marching and demonstrating. Every time you think about sharing a post, send a check to the ACLU and other organizations that are fighting against hate, oppression, destruction of the environment, etc. Otherwise, it’s just a lot of people preaching to the choir.
