Many thanks to Jamie Allen of Typesafe for these kind words. :)

Note to self: I often get the following Mac LSOpenURLsWithRole failed with error ... error message when trying to open a Java application I’ve just built on a Mac OS X system:
LSOpenURLsWithRole() failed with error -10810 for the file
This happens when I try to open my new application like this:

I saw this movie (Twilight) recently on Netflix. It wasn’t great, but it was good, very good in a way. It was great to see Paul Newman, Gene Hackman, Susan Sarandon, James Garner, Stockard Channing, and a young Reese Witherspoon in the same movie.
I’m currently working on getting two new books printed, and as I was working with the Create Space UI today, it occurred to me that I like their UI. It’s a simple, Web 1.0 UI, but everything is fairly simple, obvious, and easy to understand. The simple overlap of the rectangles shows that there is an order/flow to the way things need to be done, and they also show the status of each task. I even like that they have an “Icon Legend” on the screen. As a part-time designer and minimalist I’d like to get rid of the underlines under the hyperlinks, but in general I don’t have any huge problems with their UI.
(By contrast, if you’ve tried to use Yahoo’s webmail product during the last few months, you can see a horrible Web 2.0 UI. The designers/engineers try to do too many things, none of them well.)
I bought a Shoji screen this morning. I live in a relatively small but open space, and I want to use this to separate my work area from my other living areas.
Apple (AAPL) announced late last night that they’ve bought back $14B of its own stock in the last two weeks. As a result, they’ve bought back $40B of their stock in the last year. (And presumably “retiring” those shares, as shown in the chart.)

This image compares the life expectancy of states in the U.S. to other countries. At first I thought it was interesting, but the more I think about it, if the healthcare system in the U.S. is supposed to be so great -- as we’re often being told -- no other country should have the life expectancy of any of our states. I think we’re being fed some serious misinformation. (This map comes from this link.)
Usually when I get bored I try to learn new things. Often this means learning something new about how to use Gimp. This is a photo of a tv screen, rotated, cropped, blurred, oilified (several times), then canvas’d. The original photo is of the KBHR studio from a Season 4 episode of Northern Exposure.
