I’ll write more on this as time permits, but for now, I’ll just say that semantics in computer programming can be very important, and the term Future caused me quite a bit of grief. I wish it had been named something else, such as ConcurrentTask.

What did the porcupine cross the road? I have no idea, but this photo is from the Anchorage Daily News Twitter feed.
Sports fans in Denver are upset about that the NFL decided to hang this huge banner of Joe Flacco on the Denver Broncos stadium.
This chart from Indeed.com shows Scala programming job trends. You can always find the current chart at this URL.
As a quick note to self, here’s how I configured the firewall rules on a new CentOS 6 Linux server recently.
First, I created an “undo” script at /root/undo-iptables with these contents:
#!/bin/sh OUT=/tmp/undo-iptables.out echo "running UNDO at `date`" > $OUT unalias mv >> $OUT 2>&1 mv /etc/sysconfig/iptables /tmp >> $OUT 2>&1 /etc/init.d/iptables restart >> $OUT 2>&1
I then made that file executable.
I’m very interested in building scalable applications. I debated about signing the Reactive Manifesto, but I do believe in the general cause, so I just added my name to it. This graphic speaks to the importance of “going reactive”, especially for big applications.
I just ran across this photo on my phone. I took it when I was at the Scala Summit in Crested Butte, Colorado last week. I don’t think I’ve ever had a PBR at any altitude, but I thought it was interesting that they had a sign made. (P.S. - Crested Butte is a beautiful area, with great hiking, biking, and ATV-riding opportunities.)
This is cool: Thanks to the folks at O’Reilly, I just learned that Amazon has a thing called “Author Central”. Hopefully they’ll get all three of my books connected soon. It looks like they can also pull in my RSS feed, and Twitter posts. I guess I now also have an Amazon author page.
I have some family coming into town next week, so I find myself looking for things to do in the Boulder, Colorado area. Here’s a collection of links I’ve put together so far:
I am interested in Zen, and currently have a page for the Zen Foundation on Facebook, but I need to move the content to a Zen Foundation blog. Just ... need ... time ...
Watched this movie last week. A cute romance movie to watch with your significant other.
This is one of more than 100 bears I encountered on a trip through British Columbia, Canada, on the way to Alaska. I’m thinking about heading back up there at the end of September this year to see if I can find a few more.
As I wrote in the Preface to the Scala Cookbook, I had a certain target market in mind when I wrote the book, in particular Java developers who were interested in checking out Scala, and rapidly becoming productive in it. I’ll take this review from a well-known Scala developer as a sign that I’m in the ballpark of what I wanted to achieve.
I want to give credit where it’s due, and in the case of the great new icons I’m using on this website, they come from a website named IconMonstr.com. I really like the clean, minimalist style.
