Free Perl editors FAQ: Can you recommend any good free Perl editors?
I had to get back into some Perl development for a recent project, and when I realized the project was going to take a few days to complete, I decided to look around to see if I could find a good free Perl editor.
Komodo Edit - a free Perl editor/IDE
I don't have time to get into all the details today, but I'm glad to report that I'm pretty happy with the free ActiveState Komodo Edit editor. I've been using it on my iMac for the last few days, and I have no real complaints about using it as a Perl editor (IDE). When I used Komodo Edit on my older MacBook Pro it seemed to be a little sluggish, but I didn't really notice that sluggishness so much on my 2008 model iMac.
I will say that with Komodo Edit every time there was a feature I didn't like, I was able to modify that feature setting via the Preferences settings. I tend to be a pretty particular user -- I wrote my own blog editor because I didn't like the way anything else worked -- so I think this says a lot about Komodo Edit's flexibility.
Another great thing about Komodo Edit is that it supports multiple platforms. Downloads are available for Mac OS X, Linux, and Windows.
(If anyone is interested, I'll be glad to write more about Komodo Edit at another time. Just leave a note in the comments section below.)
Other free Perl editors
The only other Perl editor freeware program I planned to look at was the EPIC (Eclipse Perl Integration) Perl plugin for Eclipse, but I was so happy with Komodo Edit that I never got around to looking at EPIC.
If anyone has any comments about EPIC, or a comparison of EPIC versus Komodo Edit, I'd love to hear about it.
