Champion Farms burglary; and crime rises 1,666%

Although this police burglary report doesn't include the name of the Champion Farms apartment complex, I just looked up the address for the apartment complex, and sure enough, it matches the address given in the police report. Straight from the Champion Farms website, you can see their address matches this police report:

Champion Farms Apartments
3700 Springhurst Blvd
Louisville, KY 40241-5100

As I mentioned in a previous article regarding Champion Farms crime, when I came home last Thursday night there were several police cars throughout the Champion Farms parking lot, and this appears to be what they were involved with, as the burglary incident is reported at 6:30pm that evening.

Criminal activity increases 1,666% in 14 months

Looking at the Crime Reports data from the Courier-Journal for the Champion Farms area (the 40241 zip code), there is a very disturbing number of burglary, theft, criminal mischief, and drug crime reports, with 25 reports of criminal activity from November 12th through November 18th.

I wanted to run a report showing the crime in the 40241 zip code last November to see what it looked like then, but unfortunately the Courier-Journal site doesn't work properly when I try to get to that time range.

From the data I can access tonight, there were 11 crime reports over a 14-day stretch from September 7th through the 20th of 2008. Of those crime reports, five were traffic accidents, two were possession of marijuana, two were missing persons reports, and one was a fraudulent use of a credit card.

So, by my count, there were three actual crimes in that 14-day stretch. Now, if you compare that to the 25 reports of actual criminal activity in the last seven days of data, you'll see that criminal activity in the 40241 zip code (the _Champion Farms neighborhood) has increased from 0.21428 crimes per day to 3.57 crimes per day. That is a whopping increase in criminal activity of 1,666%!

I think this backs up my previous assertions that this neighborhood feels less and less safe as time goes on.
