Many websites seem to have the wrong lyrics for the Dave Matthews song, Grey Street, so to help correct that problem, here are the correct lyrics for the long version of Grey Street that Dave Matthews played with Tim Reynolds at “Live at Farm Aid 2021”:
Oh, look at how she listens
Well she says nothing of what she thinks
She just goes stumbling through her memories
Staring out onto Grey Street
But she thinks,
“Hey, how did I come to this?
I dream myself a million times around the world,
But I can’t get out of this place.”
Oh there’s an emptiness inside her
And she’d do anything to fill it in
But all the colors mix together
To grey
And it breaks her heart
You know she wishes it was different
She prays to God most every night
And though she swears He doesn’t listen
There’s a foolish hope in her
He might
She says, “I pray,
Yeah, but my prayers they fall on deaf ears
Am I supposed to take it on myself
To get out of this place?”
Oh, there’s a loneliness inside her
And she’d do anything to fill it in
And though it’s red blood bleeding from her now
It felt like cold blue ice in her heart
Feel like kicking out all the windows
And setting fire to this life
She could change everything about her
Using colors loud and bright
But all the colors mix together
To grey
And it breaks her heart
Now there’s a crazy man outside her door
Says, “Take what you can from your dreams
Make them as real as anything
Oh, it’ll take all the work out of the courage”
But she says
“Please, there’s a mad man is creeping outside my door
I live on the corner of Grey Street
Feels like the end of the world”
Oh, there’s an emptiness inside her
And she’d do anything to fill it in
And though it’s red blood bleeding from her now
Felt like cold blue ice in her heart
She feels like kicking out all the windows
And setting fire to this life
She would change every thing about her
Using colors loud and bright
But all the colors mix together
To grey
And it breaks her heart
It breaks her heart
To grey ...
Oh ... Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
(goes on for a while)
If you enjoy Grey Street as much as I do, I hope these corrected lyrics are helpful. (I didn’t know if part of the lyrics were “loud and bright” or “bold and bright”, but they are clearly “loud and bright” in the live video I linked to.)
