Quotes on “service” from Anandamayi Ma (via The Gospel of Shri Anandamayi Ma)

I really like the following quotes about keeping your mind on God all the time, from the book, The Gospel of Shri Anandamayi Ma (#ad).”

In particular, one thing I like about her approach as compared to something like Zen is that she spells out exactly how one should practice, so there is no guesswork about how to keep your mind during the day. (Zen people tend to tell you something once, and then leave you on your own.)

Anandamayi Ma quotes on service

Here are some of her quotes from the first one-third of her book that I really like:

“While performing a service, think that whatever you are doing is for God only. You are not serving a man or a creature, but God himself.”

“Keep him in your mind all the time, even while eating, drinking, walking, or sleeping. Try so as he always remains with you and in you. (Ma is urging her voice, insistent.)”

“Go on remembering Him within you as you attend to worldly duties.”

Anandamayi Ma on how to keep your mind 24x7

I also like these Anandamayi Ma quotes that aren’t about service, but rather about how you should keep your mind 24x7:

“Ever thinking of God will clear your mind. It will purify your mind.”

“Whatever there is in the universe is nothing but God.”

“And also resolve, ‘I shall remain awake all the time. I shall speak only when I read aloud or when it is necessary. Otherwise, I shall observe silence and recite His Name.’”

“One should live in and remain in Hari Chintanam (keeping one’s mind on God). That is what this body has told you.”

The Gospel of Shri Anandamayi: book review

I’ve only read about 1/3 of The Gospel of Shri Anandamayi Ma (#ad) so far, but I can easily recommend it.

One of the reasons I really like it is because Ram Dass only mentions Anandamayi Ma in passing in his books. Actually, to correct that, in Be Love Now (#ad) he does talk about her for a few pages, but notes that he only met her in passing (when she stopped on a pathway, and he said it was like meeting a deer in the forest). So finding out so much more about her has been a huge pleasure.
