True Christian Voting, 2024: Quotes from Jesus about lying, and people who lie

In a previous post I wrote that True Christian Voters should trust the Bible, Jesus, and themselves, and today I want to get into a topic that has made me so upset that I’ve started writing about these things: That we — Christian voters — need to start voting for people who REALLY tell the truth, and SHOULD NOT vote for people who blatantly lie.

If you can’t tell from that paragraph, I’m sick and tired of politicians and television shows trying to co-opt Jesus’s message for their gain. I hope you agree that this needs to stop.

What Jesus said about telling the truth

To begin with, let’s look at what Jesus said about telling the truth, and how we should not lie.

According to Matthew 5:37, in the “Sermon on the Mount,” Jesus said: “Let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No’ be ‘No.’ Anything beyond this comes from the evil one.”

In James 5:12, he is quoted as, “But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your ‘yes’ be yes and your ‘no’ be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.”

Both of these quotes are interpreted as Jesus saying that when we give our word, we should follow through. We should be straightforward and truthful.

What The Bible says about telling the truth

The Bible has many quotes about telling the truth. Indeed, so many that I am trying to find a way to narrow down what to share here, to keep this article from getting too long.

Let me try to start here with a Top 10 list. Here are the first five:

  • Exodus 23:1: You shall not spread a false report. You shall not join hands with a wicked man to be a malicious witness.
  • Isaiah 32:7: As for the scoundrel—his devices are evil; he plans wicked schemes to ruin the poor with lying words, even when the plea of the needy is right.
  • Proverbs 13:5: A righteous man hates falsehood, but a wicked man acts shamefully and disgracefully.
  • Psalm 34:13: Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit.
  • Romans 16:17-18: I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive.

And here are another five:

  • Leviticus 19:11: You shall not steal; you shall not deal falsely; you shall not lie to one another.
  • Proverbs 14:5: An honest witness does not deceive, but a false witness pours out lies.
  • Psalm 101:7: No one who practices deceit shall dwell in my house; no one who utters lies shall continue before my eyes.
  • Revelation 22:15: Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.
  • Proverbs 12:22: The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy.

As I mentioned, there are so many terrific quotes in The Bible about being honest, it’s hard to stop at ten. Therefore, here are a few more that I think are important:

  • Leviticus 19:11: You shall not steal. You shall not deceive or speak falsely to one another.
  • 1 John 2:4: Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
  • Proverbs 6:16-19: There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.
  • John 1:4: I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.

Summary

In summary, as I mentioned in my earlier article, I strongly believe that you should only trust:

  1. The Bible
  2. Jesus
  3. Yourself

And that you specifically should not trust politicians or people in the “news” industry, because it seems like these days everyone has an agenda they’re trying to promote.

Therefore, as you trust those three sources, as a true Christian, and true Christian voter, I ask you to vote in the name of the truth. DO NOT listen to a politicians WORDS, but DO listen to their ACTIONS, and then judge for yourself — based on the words of Jesus and The Bible — which politicians are truthful (or, at the very least, the most truthful).

As a true Christian, please vote the way you believe that Jesus would want you to vote.
